I'm now back in Toronto and it has been a few busy weeks, trying to get back into somewhat of a routine. I was meaning to get to this sooner but unfortunately it took me longer than anticipated. Nonetheless I'm here… looking back at my 5 weeks in Boston.

It all started with a mere thought: "what if I went to Berklee… even if it was for a short while". Then the thought grew into something of a reality. Once I had decided I was going to Berklee, with the help of family and close friends, we put together a fundraising concert, and called it Road to Berklee. The concert came together and was over in less than a month. It was indeed a great success; the support and love I received from everyone, my family, friends, sponsors, and everyone that attended was indeed a blessing.

Finally I was leaving for Berklee. After one failed visa application, stressful ticket sales for the concert (which eventually worked out), a layoff it all seemed to be falling into place. Then I got to the airport and was grilled by US customs for ever that I missed my flight. After all these and more little setbacks it all did work out.

I got to Boston and was fortunate to have a friend open up his house to me for my first and last night in Boston. He was a great help, we had some great conversations and helped me move into my new home. The next day started with auditions, long line ups and meeting new people. Within the first week after introductions classes started, and things pretty much picked up. I made new friends and met some really great people. I think the people I met was definitely one of the highlights of the program.

Finally the last week had arrived. A week full of concerts, performances and conversations over coffee with promises to keep in touch. I connected with a few of my faculty and friends quite well in this week and had some really good conversations and discussions for future plans and projects. A highlight was running into Renowned Kenyan Singer, Eric Wainaina in a coffee shop around Berklee. Eric was visiting for a workshop with the world music ensemble at Berklee. We met the following morning for breakfast with Kenyan students currently attending Berklee full time and some Berklee faculty with interest in music education in Kenya. You can check out Eric's Music at http://ericwainaina.com/

After the inspiring conversations, and great friendships I made… I returned to Toronto with a lot to think about, a lot of plans to work on. I'd like to send a shout out to everyone that helped me along the "Road to Berklee…" It may have been a matter of a few weeks or a couple months, but I have taken so much away with me that it is hard to put on paper. I have so much to work on – musically that I will look back to these 5 weeks for a while. I'd like to sincerely thank everyone that made my journey a possibility, a gain to all the sponsors, friends and well wishers. Thank you for sending me to Berklee. To the whole crew of the Road to Berklee concert it would not have been possible without you, and I do hope and pray that we can all work together again at some point. Thank you!!!

I’m at the airport now, cleared security and waiting to board in a bit. This time everything went pretty smooth. I’m sitting here with a weird feeling of emptiness thinking that its over. The 5 weeks in Boston went by super fast and now its done, its over, i’m going home. I don’t think i had a moment to actually think about it.

Anyway it has been a great journey, a great trip filled with music, new friends, ideas, conversations, then more music. I met some really great people here and i really do hope that we can stay connected and keep in touch, and possibly one day collaborate. Thank you to everyone that made it special.

This is just a short good bye Boston post. I’ve had some really interesting exchanges in the past week that i will fill you in on… In the next post!!!

Thank you berklee, thank you Boston, and a big thank you again to all the friends, colleagues, mentors, and instructors too…

Something I’ve learned being a part of three ensembles at berklee is that everybody in a band/ensemble/group/orchestra has a part to play. However subtle, everyone, every part, every instrument has its role and importance. Sometimes the instrument (or vocal section) is supposed to be subtle and that is ok. For instance background vocals, play a very important part in carrying the lead singer through and supporting the little nuances. In some respect the background vocals may have a “harder” role to play in terms of harmonizing melodies vocally.

Same thing goes for the rhythm section. While the vocalist is singing, their role is primarily to support and provide a backing for the vocalist. There’s no approximation, or room for guess work per se. The base guitar has to play his part, play the right root/chord… follow the exact progression. Same for the guitarist if his role is to give the rhythm… They’ve got to have everything they’re doing tight. Its got to come together like one piece with the vocalists as well. The background vocals (in some cases) keep it very simple in an ensemble setting – no extra vibrato or embellishments to the notes.

Having said that, everybody or some people may get their part to break out of the “pattern”. The improv/solo section. For instance after the bridge of a song, we can go into a solo section and ask the guitar to show some chops. This also may seem like its completely improv, but contrary to popular belief there still is some sort of structure to it. For instance the rest of the band will be playing the cord progressions for the chorus or verse while the soloist does his thing. The soloist in his mind knows the chords, structure, no of bars (or form) and pattern that the group is following. So essentially while you’re in your improv section, the chords of the song are still more or less the same and hence the mood of the song carries through. So that you have some sort of belonging when you come back. So… the soloing is left for the solo section. Not while the singer is doing his verse; the pianist or guitarist should not be going off in tangents or playing a contradicting melody as such… keep that for the solo section.

Another thing that I feel I’ve picked up on that I may have somewhat not consciously enforced in the past is having it all down to the T. Again no room for sloppy beginnings, transitions between sections, or endings for that matter. In both my ensembles, we’ve had to repeat sections, multiple times, such as an ending just to have it down. If this is how we’re ending then this is it. These many bars will repeat. These are the chords that we will play. This is what the vocalists (background and lead) are doing. And this is the chord we are ending on. The vocalists have to perform with conviction, there’s no room for guess work like I said before. If the drummer is ending with these crazy licks, and then the ensemble plays the last chord together, then everyone does it in unison. The pianist does not go off on a tangent after the last hit, nor does the guitarist, or vocalist for that matter. There is a definite end to a song, and its end is certain. No one is left guessing “oh is the pianist supposed to do that?” If we are ending on this chord, then the silence after that chord defines that end.

These are all little things that I’m going to take back. I’m not in anyway saying that this is how it is and these are the rules. These are the things that I have understood and picked up from my ensembles and the tips and instructions our ensemble instructors have given us. And I’ve seen it in practice at various performances now by faculty or industry professionals… and look at them and be like… aah that’s what they’re doing… the light bulb goes on and it really is a great moment.

This was a bit technical in content but I hope you enjoy the read regardless!

Best!

I know i’ve been slow at updating this page, but I’ve been super busy in between all the classes, rehearsals and trying to enjoy a little of what Boston has to offer. Overall its been great… The last week I pretty much spent doing a lot of practicing and theory homework. My theory is quite poor so I was trying to catch up on a lot of the stuff. Its fine to read it and understand but being able to use it on the fly is what takes time and effort… but It’ll get there eventually.

I’m also meeting so many people and I think that has got to be one highlight of the program. I met a Kenyan today – “Junior” from Nairobi and a full time student Wambura from Nairobi as well both within like 20 minutes. It was definitely amazing. So there was this audition workshop today that I signed up for. They start by saying “we’re going to have a mock interview today and one of our full time students (Wambura) has been kind enough to spare some time and come participate in this mock audition.” And I was like whaaaaat? No way, this girl has got to be from kenya. Sure enough, she walks in and the professor goes, so where are you from? And when she says Kenya I almost jumped out of my chair yelling me too… but then I restrained my self. And she turned out to do quite well and sang a zulu song too, which was really well done. So after the interview they held a question and answer session and I saw Wambura stand up and head towards the door, so I followed her out. I told her I’m from Kenya and she was ecstatic… so I spoke to her briefly exchanged contact information and then I headed back into the Q&A session. I leave the workshop and while I was walking on the street I see a valet attendant speaking to a cabbie in a language I thought to be swahili. So I got excited again and was like hey where are you from? He shook my hand and said Haiti… and I was like oh well I tried, and said oh thank you, I just thought I heard swahili. So all of a sudden behind me I hear oh my god its you? and I turn to see this guy delighted to see me and is like you’re from Kenya… and I was like oh yeah, he was like so you’re the guy. Apparently he’d heard from a few people that there’s this indian guy from kenya… and then we met on the street… It felt like home all of a sudden! Bliss!!!

I’ve attached a few pictures of sites from around Boston. The pictures aren’t the greatest from my Blackberry but hopefully it’ll still get the idea across I guess. The dome shaped building is the christian science centre near Berklee College. There’s tonnes of European (British) influence in the architecture of buildings and structures all around. I want to try and find some time to walk around and actually check out some of the architectural sites if I do get a chance. You see another picture of a drummer and keys… you see this almost everywhere in the back bay area. There’s musicians all over the place, playing on the streets. Its pretty cool actually. I walked into a street choir the other day and it was pretty amazing. I didn’t get a picture unfortunately. The picture of the girl standing with a guitar is part of the berklee sidewalk songwriter showcase. Every week singer-songwriters from the 5 week program get to perform their songs outside the berklee bookstore on a patio and people sit around and listen in. Its interesting, and the cool thing is that you get people from all types of backgrounds both cultural and musical. Then there’s the picture of the river from Harvard. On Sunday I ventured out to the cambridge area and Harvard square and then walked down to the river with a couple of friends. The last picture is from my Studio Recording class. This class kind of teaches us about the recording process and we get to observe and see how its done so that’s pretty cool. Some of the students actually played the drums and base line on the recording. So its coming along.

Everything else is pretty intense at the moment and I have like 5 songs to learn for my two ensembles… and then a song here and there for my vocal lab and performance classes. I’m learning a lot of theory… which is all great stuff to take back and work on to improve the craft in the big picture.

Okay back to the work now…

So a week is over and boy has it flown by. This week was pretty intense with auditions, orientation stuff and classes.

The classes are pretty cool, mostly in sizes of 5 – 15 people. They consist of theory classes, ear training classes, private lessons, and vocal labs. I have been placed in 2 ensembles (bands) and managed to squeeze my way into a third one a middle eastern ensemble by audition. The theory and “knowledge” classes are pretty awesome because they help improve my understanding of music, its theory, song formation and structure. I still haven’t had my elective classes which are on mondays. I’m looking forward to those as well. Oh and some of the labs/recording studios/ensemble rooms are pretty awesome… Amazing setup everywhere!

Like I mentioned before everyone here is pretty much super talented and there’s an opportunity to learn from, watch and observe just about everyone. One of my Ensembles is led by Recording Artist Daniel Mcclain (http://www.myspace.com/danielsingz) and that is just awesome… you get real life industry thoughts all the time.

I haven’t done much else around Boston as yet, I’ll probably plan something next weekend, I kind of spend this weekend being lazy, studying and practicing. When I do go around, I’ll definitely share some pictures as well.

Hope you’re having a good weekend!!!

So I’ve arrived and somewhat settled into my new place for 5 weeks… Its been great so far. The first few days were really awkward, trying to reconnect with the feeling of being in school again, residence rules, fixed meal times etc… But i’ve pretty much adjusted to that aspect of it.

The talent here is phenomenal… There’s so much to learn from each and every student (most are below the age of 18), teacher, instructor, visiting artists its unbelievable. I just feel really humbled to be blessed with this opportunity and I’m trying to take it all in, focus and learn.

Classes formally began on Tuesday and I already feel like I have enough stuff and learning to do. I’ve already had some ensemble classes, individual vocal lessons, theory lessons, musicianship/ear training lessons and technically this is only day 2.

Today I attended a seminar by Mr. Dawaun Parker (berklee alumna) and it was great to get an idea of the inside picture! Dawaun is a Grammy-Award winner and Producer for Dr. Dre. He has worked with the likes of Dr. Dre, Eminem, Jay-Z and more.

Right now I’m just really enthused, motivated, inspired… and exhausted too!!! But its great, and I’m loving every bit of it so far. Now I’m late for choir auditions!

Sorry this post wasn’t too entertaining…

So I’m sitting at my boarding gate thinking to myself… That there’s been little hurdles everywhere on this path…

I wake up this morning, prepared and organised, having checked in to my flight last night. I get to the airport on time, check my luggage in and head to US customs. I hand over my documents to the lady standing there, she goes through it and points me in, without a word. So I wait patiently in line, for my turn, reach the desk eventually and hand in my documents. I answer a few regular questions… Then find out I need to pick up a form from the lady that said nothing to me. So I go back, get the form, fill it in and wait patiently again.

Then I walk up to the desk and start answering the regular questions again… Why berklee? Why are you doing this course? What do you get out of it? what do you plan on doing with what you learn from the course? So I answer and with a really confused face, he shrugs and says ok whatever… Looks at my documents again, gets up and says follow me…

So we go into this isolated area, there’s a waiting room. So I sit, luggage in hand and I wait. He hands my docs to another officer and he leaves. The officer disappears into a room… And I wait. I flip through a magazine, check my phone, read the signs posted on the wall, then read them again. Eventually he comes out and starts asking me more questions… Some of which I have already answered twice now, then he makes me open my bags… Goes through my stuff. Asks me to show him my music equipment – so I display my microphone, cable, mp3 recorder and so on…

He sees a binder in my back pack and decides to open it, scans through all my documents, asks me more questions that I answer, then says ok pack up your stuff. And he disappears yet again. So I wait, now I really need to pee too, so I cross my legs uncomfortably, I knew I shouldn’t have gulped down that water bottle on my way to the airport. So I read the signs again, look at the steel truss that hold the roof in place, examine the patterns on the carpet, read the signs again, yawn and stretch a couple of times… Then he comes out and says you’re all set.

Now I realise the time and my flight was boarding 45 minutes ago. So I rush through, hand in my bag, then wait in line again to pass security. So I empty everything again, lap top, ipad, cell phone, mic etc… Belt shoes… Watch… And go through the scanner, no beep fortunately… And thankfully an intelligent scan checker that realises it actually is a microphone.

So I put my stuff back together, I cringe… My bladder is about to explode. I dash towards the gate, and decide a minute at the urinal won’t be too damaging. I reach my boarding gate, to find no one. I see security personnel sitting aimlessly, discussing the weather perhaps, and ask them where the attendants are. They say well they should be back soon.

Does this mean I miss my flight? He shrugs and says perhaps… Oh wait they are pulling the bridge back so yes… Then turns to discuss plans for the weekend perhaps. At this time I laugh at my luck… And wait for the attendants to return.

Then, having discussed the weather, weekend plans, the security guard stands up and asks where I was… They announced your name a few times, and I say well with customs… So he punches a code at a door and says wait here, and he disappears… A few minutes later he walks back with two attendants both women to my relief… And he shrugs and says I tried… So I make an attempt at the saddest face that I can display, and she says right I’ll have to book you on the next flight. Thank you, I sigh…

Then I go grab a sandwich and a chai tea latte – grande to be precise… And I write to you!

Have a good weekend people. Much love, see you in Boston!
